6 Tips to Help You Save Money on Holiday

Whether you are looking to jet off abroad or are keen to explore everything that the UK has to offer, you can still enjoy a much-needed break away without breaking the bank. Here are our top 5 tips to help you save money on holiday and keep the costs down.

One of the main reasons why people don’t get to enjoy a summer break each year is because of the cost that comes with going on holiday. From transport to paying for accommodation, the costs can feel endless. But while some holidays can be expensive, there are ways that you can save money along the way.

Get a travel credit card

One of the main expenses that come with going on holiday is the money you spend while you’re away. From spending too much money while out exploring a new location to keeping your money safe at all times, there are lots of things to consider. This is why we recommend you sign up for a travel credit card instead. This allows you to spend money safely while away without incurring the foreign transaction fees that come with other standard credit cards.

This is a particularly useful option if you plan on paying by card frequently, perhaps if you are on a city break and need to make multiple purchases on a daily basis. In addition, if you spend over £100 on items to take home (such as electronic items), a travel credit card offers further protection through Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

But make sure that you stick to a holiday budget before you go away and have a plan for how you will make the repayments once you get home.

Compare Travel Credit Cards

If you’re planning on travelling abroad, you might want to think about getting a travel credit card to avoid transaction fees. Try the money matches eligibility tool to see the likelihood of you being accepted for a credit card today.

Always pay in the local currency

An important tip you should keep in mind when heading off abroad this year is to always pay in the local currency. If you are heading to the till and want to pay with your travel credit card then you may be asked by the cashier if you want to pay in the local currency or pound sterling. If asked this, be sure to always say local currency as this allows your card provider to do the exchange rate for you instead of the retailer.

While it may initially sound better, the problem with the retailer doing the exchange rate for you is that they can define the rate, which is often much higher than the actual exchange rate. Therefore, paying in the local currency and getting your provider to do the exchange instead is preferable when paying on your travel credit card.

Use Teacher Discounts

While the cost of going on holiday can soon start to add up, you can save a considerable amount of money by using the discounts we have available.

Whether you are looking for a boutique hotel for your city break or a cosy cottage for a countryside getaway, our teacher accommodation discounts are exactly what you are looking for.

Cut down on holiday extras

There are plenty of holiday extras to snap up, including flight upgrades, accommodation upgrades, private transfers from the airport and many others. As much as these are good for a luxury holiday, they aren’t always necessary if there is a perfectly good equivalent.

But by taking public transport and saying no to flight upgrades, you can save considerably. Even small things like planning your meals in advance and staying away from the hotel minibar can have a huge impact on how much you spend while you’re away.

Always use flight-comparison sites

Flights can take up a considerable amount of your travelling budget, so if you’re looking to save where you can, we would recommend using flight-comparison sites. They can compare prices from thousands of websites in seconds, finding you the best prices for your flight around the world.

While you may not think that the savings for each individual flight are worth it, if you are looking to explore different places, then the savings can soon start adding up.

Don’t give up on your hopes of being able to afford a holiday this year. With our money-saving discounts and tips, you can enjoy that well-earned rest for less!
